Yes, definitely. Virtually nothing requires versions of automake
before 1.8, and most of our testing is done with 1.9 (recommended).

The automake-1.x packages manage an automake symlink through
/etc/alternatives, but for some reason, 1.4 has the highest priority.
I would remove 1.4, and install 1.9.
