Thanks for the reply, Charles. Running tripplitesu by itself yields:

Unable to detect Tripp Lite SmartOnline UPS on port /dev/ttyS0

The 'read char' lines do not show up on every invocation. Additional
debug levels don't seem to do anything differently.

I had tried emailing the developer some 12 months or so ago but got no
response. I can't remember if it was Allen Hassenflow or not. If I can't
work this out here, I'll give it another shot.
