I was able to connect to upsd with telnet:

$ telnet localhost 3493
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
GET UPSDESC Z2UPS
UPSDESC Z2UPS "z2 power"
GET VAR Z2UPS UPS.STATUS
VAR Z2UPS UPS.STATUS "OL CHRG"

with upsc I still get an error:

# /usr/local/ups/bin/upsc z2ups at localhost
Error: Unknown error

Any way that I can further troubleshoot the problem?

thanks
