Did you specify any compiler flags? No, you left them blank, which
even according to the above line isn't a valid option.
The configure system attempts to detect as much stuff automatically as
possible (which in your case it did for the options you didn't
override). We expect people to only additional flags after finding the
automatic detection failed. As such, the amount of validation of input
is limited.

In that case, you didn't read the INSTALL document either. At least
from packagers we expect that they read at least this document (and
the README file).
