The apctest program from apcupsd does not offer much more insight:

This forum post from 2013 suggests that an easy way is to change the UPS setting to "test at power on", then use a script (with NUT, you would run something like "upscmd ups at server battery.start.quick") to run it at your preferred time:

Changing the self test interval will depend on your specific UPS model.
