Looking at the list of libusb entries from the working (openSUSE 13.1 w/libusb from the ISO) and non-working (openSUSE 13.1 w/libusb from repository), the versions look the same to me, but the hex number following the lib is different.

I will give it a go of getting the latest libusb that you linked to me a try, to see if maybe it was some bug introduced that is now resolved, and that way I can at least write my instructions with that directive (to get the latest).
