The 2.7.4 tarball predates the work towards supporting libusb-1.0, so libusb-0.1 should work. Check the wiki link I sent earlier - it describes a way to build the package such that you get all the needed dependencies. In particular, for building against libusb-0.1, you will need the libusb-dev package.
