To clarify, did you connect it with both USB and serial links?
It may be possible that the hardware/firmware prefers one over another, to
avoid ambiguity, and so the serial port is just not listened to?
Just in case, it is fairly easy to check by unplugging the USB. Not sure if
cycling the UPS would be needed...
