This imap library has some good buzz:
<http://www.etpan.org/libetpan/index.html>. It's been around since 2003,
has been actively developed, and v.1.0 was finally released in April
2010. It's written in C; there's also a Perl version.

Might be worth knowing about, for comparison, or as a basis for a Python
library.
