Hi, I'm kind of late to reply on this, but there is a sixth option:
6. Use python code from your code file to return the values.
remoteusereval = get_username("imap.gmx.net")
remotepasseval = get_password("imap.gmx.net")
This can be used to query e.g. the gnome-keyring for the password.
