I have the feeling that people preferr to have that functionality
within offlineimap, ie retrying in case of failure.

Of course that won't help if offlineimap freezes indefinitely, and I am
not sure how to detect that from within offlineimap.

The proper solution will be to make offlineimap more robust and find out
where it hangs and why :). A faulty IMAP implementation must not be a
reason for us to hang.
