I'm sure this is already common knowledge, but yeah, gmail does throttle 
connections.  I'm currently trying to backup a gmail account with 
getmail via IMAP.  After the first day, where I was able to download 
several thousand messages, I'm now limited to about 10 messages per 
connection.  I was hoping that waiting a couple days to a week would 
reset the throttle, but it doesn't seem to.
