Negative message numbers?

Gmail refuses to APPEND some messages, such as messages containing Gmail
chat logs. (Don't ask me why). But in these cases, it gives at least
some other error message and does not simply cut the connection.

I am at a loss as to why that message repeatedly doesn't work, to be
honest.
