IDLE cleanup and dropped connection improvement

I was looking at the IDLE IMAP code for the first time, to make sure we
really discard dropped connections using the new drop_conn parameter in
releaseconnection(). But it was a bit of a mess, no code documentation,
and poorly named variables for a start. Here is a series of 5 patches (I
attempted to keep them as small and isolated as I could), to clean up
the code. Patch #5 makes sure that dead connections are really dropped.

I would appreciate if someone who regularly uses IDLE could test the
series to make sure that IDLE still works well.
