Setting

cert_fingerprint = f3043dd689a2e7dddfbef82703a6c65ea9b634c1

in each account that accesses imap.gmail.com fixes the problem. 

I don't know how SSL fingerprints work, so I don't know the security
implementations of the above "solution".
