I got more curious and tried recording more of the output. Here I ran
"offlineimap -f INBOX -1" four times, each time stopping it myself with
Ctrl-C:

 Syncing INBOX: Gmail -> MappedIMAP
 Deleting 2 messages (39794:39795) in MappedIMAP[INBOX]
 Copy message -2333 (1 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3183 (2 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3182 (3 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3181 (4 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3180 (5 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3179 (6 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3178 (7 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3177 (8 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3176 (9 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3175 (10 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3174 (11 of 3183) local:INBOX -> remote

 Syncing INBOX: Gmail -> MappedIMAP
 Deleting 5 messages (39796:39800) in MappedIMAP[INBOX]
 Copy message -2333 (1 of 3172) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3172 (2 of 3172) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3171 (3 of 3172) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3170 (4 of 3172) local:INBOX -> remote

 Syncing INBOX: Gmail -> MappedIMAP
 Copy message -2333 (1 of 3168) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3168 (2 of 3168) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3167 (3 of 3168) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3166 (4 of 3168) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3165 (5 of 3168) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3164 (6 of 3168) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3163 (7 of 3168) local:INBOX -> remote

 Syncing INBOX: Gmail -> MappedIMAP
 Deleting 2 messages (39803,39805) in MappedIMAP[INBOX]
 Copy message -2333 (1 of 3161) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3161 (2 of 3161) local:INBOX -> remote
 Copy message -3160 (3 of 3161) local:INBOX -> remote

The first run copied 11 messages. You would expect the number of messages
still to be copied to go down from 3183 to 3172 -- and this is what seems
to have happened since the second run starts at 3172.

But what about the five deleted messages in the second run? What is going
on there?
