If nobody objects, I would like to move forward with the following plan:
a) reduce the backlog with the help of a hired Debian GNU/Linux developer ( eNovance will pay his fees )
b) make an inventory of the differences between Debian GNU/Linux and Ubuntu packages
c) ask the hired Debian GNU/Linux developer to reduce the differences to a bare minimum (ideally no difference)
that would achieve two important things:
a) reduce the backlog
b) reduce the long term workload as it will be easier to re-use the work done by Ubuntu

I fully agree with you. I'm not sure how we should proceed with regard to maintenance of Folsom. I would like to first sort out a sustainable plan regarding Essex + Wheezy. And I'll keep recruiting volunteer Debian GNU/Linux developers to help out.
