I don't think it is. I did not look at the source, but from the
documentation it is  a compatibility layer to have a Python 3 codebase
run on Python 2. I gues in the Openstack context it's used to avoid
having to do one big switchover from Python 2 to Python 3. So to be able
to convert some modules to Python 3 while still being able to run them
on Python 2 because not everything is converted yet.

It would help if you could formulate a bit more specific concerns than
just "security nightmare" and "copy of stdlib".
