Actually, we can't.  I've been told on numerous occassions by various company lawyers that copyright years must be explicitly listed.  Ranges are not valid.  Also, it's in the GNU maintainer's guide:

Jim, the patches look good to me, btw.

I've got some minor fixes for the 1.8.x branch that I need to commit.  I'd like to do a 1.8.9 release here soon.
