I have done some more testing using different versions of parted.

The problem does not occur with parted-1.8.8.

The problem does occur with parted-2.2-5ubuntu4 as shipped with Ubuntu
10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Beta 2.

The problem _does not_ occur with a recent git copy (Fri Apr 16 10:01:08
2010 +0200 Petr Uze .gitignore: ignore index files...) of parted with
the two patches applied from the following mailing list entry:
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/parted-devel/2010-April/003552.html

Since this problem appears only with the parted-2.2-5ubuntu4 version,
this looks more like a bug specific to the Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)
Beta 2 distribution.
