All that you describe here is consistent. For some reason the library that 
partman uses to read the existing partition table (libparted) is failing 
to do so, even though fdisk can read it.

This is not something that we as installer developers are expert in. You 
can probably get better help on this from the maintainers of the parted 
package, of which libparted is a part. Reassigning the installation 
report there.

Some questions/suggestions that may help you/them along.
- Are there any messages in /var/log/syslog, /var/log/partman or dmesg in 
the installer that can help explain what is happening?
- What's on the existing linux partitions?
- Do you have a current version of parted installed there? What happens if 
you try to run that?
- If you do not have a recent version of parted, try booting your system 
with a recent life CD (knoppix, ubuntu) and run parted from there.
- Check output to console and logfiles when you do run it.
