Weird. It should be saying
 You need to install the perl-doc package to use this program.
because you have purged the perl-doc package:

> pn  perl-doc                      <none>     (no description available)

What's the output of 
 ls -l /usr/bin/perldoc*
 grep perldoc /var/lib/dpkg/diversions
?

Was this system upgraded from an earlier release (or testing/unstable)
or is it a new Lenny installation?

Are there any traces of problems with the perl-doc package in
 /var/log/dpkg.log*
 /var/log/apt/term.log*
 /var/log/aptitude*
?
