It's not the only package, I remember playing with substvars in one
or two other packages before.
But I'm also a bit hesitant about _this_ drastic solution.

That would indeed be nice, and IIRC this idea already came up in the
discussion about the last issue (probably on IRC).
I guess someone[tm] should try to hack up something :)
