I like Kalle's suggestion that "local $1" should happen automatically,
and would prefer if that could be added as an upstream RFE or whatever
they call it.  I don't feel qualified to argue with upstream about this
so would appreciate if Kalle or yourself could volunteer to bring this
suggestion upstream.  Whether this Debian bug is closed or not is more
or less immaterial but I would not like to lose Kalle's suggestion.
