While this is a valid point, I assume that also a plain
dpkg-buildpackage in a "normal" environment fails, which is not
elegant.

As a side note: Some months ago I tried to come up with a patch; this
sounds simple, and (un)setting enviroment variables is nothing
unusual -- but as you can see from the lack of a patch I failed :/
