IMO the two approaches are: track yourself (or via git) or track via the BTS. in both cases I want patches via git, whether via mail attachments or as git pull requests from public repos.

always branch of "develop", please. (I'm thinking about only using+having a bikeshed branch if it's different from develop, which is rarely the case.)
"reportbug" from the devscripts package is useful to submit bugs, but any mailer will do. see this example ;)
