I think that it is better than what packages currently do, according to Adam:
pcsx2 crashes at startup (with no indication of what the problem is to
non-terminal users) with SIGILL.
chromium gives an ugly xmessage dialog and then exits.
It would be nice if they both do runtime detection, but given that
they don't, as a user I think I would prefer to not be able to install
packages that do not run on my CPU over installing them and having
them crash.
Another option would be to move the detection into apt and make the
package names completely virtual based on the runtime CPU to make the
interface to this a bit more user-friendly. That wouldn't change the
situation for piuparts though.
