Package: brltty
Version: 6.9.1+repack-2
Severity: normal
Tags: patch
The Debian packaging source contains an invalid udev ENV assignment in
debian/brltty-udeb.udev.rules at line 611:
ENV{BRLTTY_GENERIC}=1
systemd-udevd rejects this syntax; the value must be quoted.
Observed environment: Ubuntu/Kubuntu 26.10 (stonking), systemd 261,
brltty 6.9.1+repack-1ubuntu1, Linux 7.3.0-9-generic (amd64).
The Ubuntu binary package installs the affected rule as
/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/85-brltty.rules.
Reproduction:
udevadm verify /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/85-brltty.rules
Actual result:
/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/85-brltty.rules:611 Invalid key/value pair, ignoring.
/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/85-brltty.rules: udev rules check failed.
1 udev rules files have been checked.
Success: 0
Fail: 1
The same problem was independently reproduced with the source archive
brltty_6.9.1+repack-2.debian.tar.xz retrieved from deb.debian.org.
The bad assignment is present at the same line in
debian/brltty-udeb.udev.rules.
Proposed patch:

Regression verification (both against isolated temporary copies):
Installed Ubuntu rule, original: Fail: 1, patched: Success: 1, Fail: 0.
Debian source rule, original: Fail: 1, patched: Success: 1, Fail: 0.
The production rule was not modified; no udev reload or braille hardware
operation was performed. This validates syntax, not end-to-end device behavior.
The upstream BRLTTY template Autostart/Udev/usb-template.rules.in does not
contain this Debian-specific generic-device stanza.
Please review and include this minimal fix in Debian packaging, so it can
also be picked up by Ubuntu. Thank you.
Reported with AI assistance; reproducer, source match and before/after
validation were checked directly.
