Package: acpid
Version; 1.0.8-1
Severity: wishlist
Tag: patch

It would be useful to have acpid be able to use netlink instead of
/proc/acpi/event, which is deprecated. I (briefly) found a need for this when
testing 2.6.29-rc* on my EeePC 901: the Fn-Fx and the silver hot keys weren't
working, and I found that they were only being reported via netlink. (While
their being reported via netlink is new to 2.6.29-rc*, their not being
reported via the old event interface is a regression. I've sent a patch to
the relevant kernel people.)

(Upstream is "working towards netlink support", according to the project's
home page.)

The attached patch is from http://www.tedfelix.com/linux/acpid.html (via
gentoo). It has one very useful feature, other than providing support for
netlink: if you configure acpid to use netlink, it becomes possible to
distinguish between lid-up and lid-down events. OTOH, hotkey events may be
reported differently (they are for my 901). Both changes are already handled
in eeepc-acpi-scripts.git.
