upgrading to kernel 2.6.9 half enables the passthrough.
The passthrough is now turned on however instead of streaminf normally the sound is very stuttery.
Symtoms.
the digital in led on the lamp flickers on and off and some sound is heard.
this affects xine/vlc and mplayer

downgrading libalsa and kernel enables normal passthrough playback.
