[The help screen doesn't say how to get out back to alsamixer. All one
sees is ESC to exit at top of screen.  Wait, I see RET listed... OK,
but I would make it first.]

Is F1, F2, h, ? listed on the man page? No. Nor is any help screen mentioned.

One would hope all the keystrokes would be listed on following
pages. Some users might never encounter the man page and think this is
all there is. Or say "see the man page for remaining keystrokes."
