Sorry, I've just had a bad month so I didn't get around to trying
anything. I've done the following:
apt-get install alsa-source
cd /usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.8
make-kpkg modules
dpkg -i ../alsa-modules-2.6.8cavy1_1.0.6a-11+1.0_i386.deb

In answer to the debconf question, I said no to "ISA PnP", yes to
"enable debugging", and selected the emu10k1 driver from the list.
However, this did not change the behaviour in any significant way.

Is this the right procedure? Is there any useful debugging output I can
send?

Thanks,

In 1997 a group of programmers started writing a desktop environment
to fix a travesty they didn't create. Their program promptly found
its way onto un*x systems everywhere. Today, still opposed by a
software monopolist, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you share
their vision, if you know you can help, and if you can connect to
internet, maybe you can join... the K-Team.
