What are the names of the modules that are loaded?

What variant of libesd do you have installed -- libesd0 or libesd-alsa0?

Which kernel version?

Do you have an alsa-modules* package installed?

Are you using discover1? discover? hotplug? Which versions?

P.S. The default sound system for sarge is OSS (which is the default
sound system in Linux 2.4 which is the default kernel for sarge) so it
isn't surprising that ALSA does take some manual steps to set up.
Perhaps you can help us make it easier, though.
