Well, this is my situation:

luca@gismo:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep libesd
libesd-alsa0                                    install
luca@gismo:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep gamix
=====

As you can see, I already installed libesd-alsa0 instead libesd0.

1) Why shouldn't I use gmix, the one included in gnome-media, which is
a GStreamer-based mixer?

2) Why should I remove mixers from the GNOME panel?

BTW, I've enabled the esd at startup.
