I don't know.  I was hoping that I could find a quick and obviously
correct fix for the problem which would not require me to go in and
understand what the program is doing with that file.

Given the amount of trouble that the program is giving and its limited
usefulness, I am becoming more and more inclined to follow Ubuntu and
eliminate it from alsa-utils entirely.
