There are two problems here.  The first is that the information saved by
alsactl under one kernel can't be read by alsactl for restoring levels
on another kernel.  The second is that alsactl fails to report an error
message or status when this failure happens.  The second problem, at
least, is certainly a bug; we should try[1] to get it fixed.
