I can't confirm this works: crashes for me at 48KHz as well (after a
long period of inactivity). amaroK using gstreamer output (with
alsasink) crashes too, but I haven't investigated how to check what
frequency is using, and how to change it.

In case it's relevant, my drivers are not the latest:

    % cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.9rc2 (Thu Mar 24 10:33:39 2005 UTC).

    % cat /proc/asound/SI7012/codec97#0/ac97#0-0 | grep Hz
    SPDIF Control : Consumer PCM Category=0x2 Generation=1 Rate=48kHz

I realize that perhaps upgrading the drivers will solve it, but I
won't be able to do that in the near future. I thought I'd mention,
  anyway.
