You need the module in 2 cases: 

1. you run i386 sarge or sid (32bit userland) with a 64bit kernel and want 
to access your soundcard

2. you run amd64 sarge or sid (64bit userland) with a 64bit kernel and
want to run 32bit applications (like doom3 or cedega) wich need to
access your soundcard
