Package: alsa-modules-2.4.27-1-multimedia-686
Version: 1.0.8+1
Severity: grave
File: alsa-modules-2.4.27-1-multimedia
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

Between Alsa versions 1.0.6 and 1.0.8 mpu401 support was removed from the snd-intel8x0 driver. There may well be good reasons for doing this, however it breaks MIDI support. The documentation for the module sort of vaguely mentions it, which considering the severity of the breakage is unforgiveable.

>From discussions elsewhere, I know this has happened upstream and from the complete lack of warnings or advice given on how to reconfigure MIDI, I can only assume that the original author isn't a musician.

I'm not sure how to find out the upstream author of this module, If you have any clues, do pass them on. It might come across better from someone who isn't quite so annoyed about it. ;] grrr.

The fix I would like to see is a clear and obvious warning in the module documentation and advice on how to reconfigure MIDI. Then I could put something in the A/DeMuDi FAQ to warn other users.

I have set the severity and Justification of this report rather strongly as the lesser settings don't reflect the breakage that I'm experiencing.

cheers,

tim
