hello;
I noticed at the alsa-wiki pages that alsa will use /etc/asound.conf for
some configuration data; this behavior is apparently implemented via
/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf
Maybe it would be useful if a default /etc/asound.conf was set-up by
debconf, allowing the user to at least specify some "custom" settings for
the 'default' pcm device [pcm.default in alsa.conf], like so:
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 0
device 0
}
I'm guessing that the "!" on "!default" makes it override the settings for
the pcm.default device, without redefining the thing entirely. I'll admit
that I don't know the syntax of alsa.conf in full, though.
With that, one could then use 'default' as the name of the alsa device, for esd
and such. Examples:
esound -d default ## when using libesd-alsa0
alsaplayer -d default somefile.wav
Granted, alsa configuration files aren't the purtiest things; still, this
would offer the user a basis for modifying the settings for the 'default'
sound device, without going through every application init-script that's
been told to use it -- one could just edit the settings for the pcm.default
device, in /etc/alsa.conf, rather than editing all of the init scripts.
It might also be helpful to put a comment, in the generated /etc/asound.conf,
directing the admin to http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=.asoundrc
just some thoughts
thanks for maintaining this stuff

OK :)
FYI. The configuration program I mentioned earlier is now called 'asound=
conf'
and is included in the alsa-utils package. Currently it is very skeletal=
.
