Some more data points.

1) I have tried with 2.6.19:

# cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.13 (Tue Nov 28
14:07:24 2006 UTC).

2) The bug is still present but apparently in slightly modified form:
   chronyd now sometimes blocks aplaymidi, but is seldom "busy" in that
state. I guess this will make diagnosis more difficult.
