Which glibc? Did you checked arts(d) BTS? Stop artsd via kcontrol
and check for a running alsa.

Running 2.6 kernels using alsaconf is absolutely obsolete. We have
udev on board ;)

There is no releation from X to alsa yet.

We are running linux. dpkg-reconfigure libasond2 does the job.

Obsolete!

This points me to a possible bug in artsd, because this daemon
corresponds to kdm or whatever kde stuff you are using.
