I replied:

I was forgetting that the alsa-utils initscript, which runs at /etc/rcS.d/S50,
takes care of restoring mixer levels for cards whose drivers were loaded earlier.
The error message you saw can be ignored. It's ugly, but I doubt that this is
worth fixing since most people are using udev now; on udev systems no error
message will appear.
