One of the reasons for that is: There is no /dev/snd/

If alsa-utils detects OSS like stuff it cretaes its devices in /dev.
If alsa ist detected, then in /dev/snd/

A workaround could be:
# rm /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
# /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart
# alsamixer
Adjust, unmute and exit <ESC>

Test sound.
