I purged the alsa modules package, edited the /etc/modules files, and
restarted the system. It
appears the system is still using the powermac driver though, and
alsa still seems to be
having problems. Here's the output from lsmod:

snd_powermac 48704 3
snd_aoa_i2sbus 24388 0
snd_pcm_oss 52480 0
snd_mixer_oss 20384 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 92324 4 snd_powermac,snd_aoa_i2sbus,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 26084 2 snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 11272 1 snd_pcm
snd 67476 10
snd_powermac,snd_aoa_i2sbus,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 8900 1 snd
snd_aoa_soundbus 7908 1 snd_aoa_i2sbus
