The symptom noted below all but rules out alsa-utils as the source of the error; you're dealing with either Linux or hardware.

Something got really screwed up :(
After cold boot:

# /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart
Shutting down ALSA...warning: 'alsactl store' failed with error message
'alsactl: save_state:1497: No soundcards found...'...Invalid card number.

Rebooting (warm) restores things to normal behaviour, but that's wintendo
behaviour that makes me unhappy.
