Contrary to what /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/README.Debian.gz led me to
believe, this actually works. So it seems that the instructions on
README.Debian.gz are misleading at best, if not wrong. They say:

 LSA has a special built-in module autoloading system (...)  it is
 useless if your /dev directory is managed by udev, (...) here is a
 brief explanation of how it is supposed to work.

I think that this text needs to be amended to explain that this will
work in combination with udev, too.


Anyway, I don't consider that a replacement for a working asoundconf;
the /etc/modprobe.d/sound solution is a system-wide one, asoundconf is
a per-user one. However, removing asoundconf (or its set-default-card
command) would indeed fix this bug; a working asoundconf would be even
better.
