What tells
$ lsmod | grep snd
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
$ cat /etc/modules
$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
Are you running artsd? If so please check kmixer ifor muted channels
or try without artsd.
Did you tried sound as root? Is $USER in group audio?
