Hi ALSA maintainers,

in the current release notes for Debian 5.0 ("lenny"), we write:

"5.2.3. Sound configuration

For the 2.6 kernel series the ALSA sound drivers are recommended
over the older OSS sound drivers. ALSA sound drivers are provided
as modules by default. In order for sound to work, the ALSA
modules appropriate for your sound hardware need to be loaded. In
general this will happen automatically if you have, in addition
to the alsa-base package, the discover package installed. The
alsa-base package also “blacklists” OSS modules to prevent
discover from loading them. If you have OSS modules listed in /
    etc/modules, you should remove them."

Is this text still applicable for our upcoming release or is it
outdated?

Furthermore, there is a paragraph about potential upgrade problems:

"5.1.9. Sound stops working

In rare cases, sound might stop working after the upgrade. If
this happens, go through the ALSA checklist:

      ● run alsaconf as root user,

      ● add your user to the audio group,

      ● make sure the sound channel levels are up and unmuted (using
        alsamixer),

      ● make sure arts and esound are not running,

      ● make sure no OSS modules are loaded,

      ● make sure the speakers are actually switched on, and

      ● check whether the command

        cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp

        works for root."

Is this still the recommended thing to do?

TIA.
