It's always good to tell which Powerbook G4 your are testing simply
because they don't have all the same sound hardware.
for example:
$ grep machine /proc/cpuinfo
machine		: PowerBook5,6
(g4 @1.6 Ghz)

the powerbook5,6 doesn't required the workaround below.

Can it be this package which is reponsible of detecting the soundcard
that requires explicitly the module snd-powermac ?

the interesting part for us, seems to be in the file discover-mac-io.sh
